Being "Green" Was Once Called "Waste Not-Want Not"
When I was growing up, there was a statement used a lot that was 'waste not, want not' and today the same thing is called being green. Living a green life is basically not wasting any of our resources.
Back then, it was more on not throwing away food, where nowadays it is more on not wasting energy, but the principles are identical. 50 years ago there weren't nearly as many people, or nearly as many electronic gadgets. A lot more devices and a lot more people are demanding much more gasoline and electricity than ever before. It will get to a point where our energy supplies will run out.
Technology is moving forward as we search for alternative forms of energy; nonetheless, we can't continue to waste our current resources. If millions of people driving their cars daily help cause pollution, then those same millions of people driving less would lessen pollution. Anything that has been done to contribute to the problem, could help remedy the problem by no longer being done. If every person on the planet have their lights on causes a massive use of electricity, think about the amount of electricity that could be saved by everyone turning their lights off.
Just because something is convenient, doesn't mean that it is good to do or must be done. For instance, all of the paper, plastic and styrofoam being used at fast food restaurants are filling up the landfills very quickly. A lot of us do not pause and think about recycling the packaging, we just eat then dump the trash and move on. This is happening in just about every major city throughout the world. Think about how much energy is used to produce things that are used one-time and immediately thrown away.
Sometimes conservation doesn't happen, such as with gasoline for our vehicles, until the price gets so expensive that we are forced to conserve. How many people never even give some thought to saving on energy, until their energy bill gets so high that they are note able to afford it. A single person may not have an impact on improving the environment. A single person will not have an immediate impact but if everyone decided to do it together, we can see a remarkable change. All you have to do is simple things, like not driving so often, don't let your car idle for long periods of time, start recycling and don't buy things any more that can't be recycled.
Your life doesn't need to change that much to end wasting energy. You don't need to take needless trips in your car or truck. You can find ways to use less water and electricity without affecting your life. All you need to do is slow down and simplify your life a little bit.
